We called a cab and went four or five miles into Puntarenas for a visit to this old port city. It was a terminus for the railroad which spanned the country, the other being Puerto Limon on the Atlantic side. The waterfront warehouses and the railroad are no longer in use because shipping nowadays goes by truck or bus to the duty free manufacturing zone on the central plateau. Cruise ships soetimes call here instead of Puerto Caldera because there is more to see and to buy. The city has grown considerably in the last six years since we were first here.
